Château d'Anet
Considered a jewel of the French Renaissance and a Mecca of art, Anet Castle was built in 1548 by King Henry II for his favourite, Diane de Poitiers. The greatest artists of the time took part in its construction, including Philibert de l'Orme, a Renaissance architect and humanist known for his anti-Italianism and his interpretation of antiquity. The estate includes the magnificent château de Diane, of which only one wing remains, the royal chapel in the shape of a Greek cross, a masterpiece of originality with its trompe l'oeil checkerboard, the triumphal gateway in which the curious clock indicating the phases of the moon is set, and the funerary chapel in which Diane was laid to rest again on 29 May 2010.
